National Geographic Student Expeditions - Iceland and Yellowstone

August 06, 2015

This summer, I had the privilege of teaching photography to high school students for National Geographic Student Expeditions. Our first trip included 12 days of exploration around Yellowstone National Park. The successive journey was 15 days circumnavigating Iceland. Here are some of the images that I captured along the way.

A small group of humpback whales bubble feed on herring near Snow Pass in #Alaska. This feeding habit is rather extraordinary. The whales find a school of fish. From below, one whale will blow a ring of bubbles, which traps the fish. A second whale will vocalize, thus scaring the fish. Then the whales will swim upwards, through the ring, mouths agape, gulping water and fish. Only certain individuals display this habit, and those whales are not related.
