This fall, I worked aboard the National Geographic Sea Lion, where I taught passengers photography, photo editing and storytelling. Our journey was through Alaska's Inside Passage and along the coast of British Columbia. Each day, we would search for wildlife, learn about natural history and experience unique cultural events. Several images from the expedition with National Geographic and Lindblad are below.
Cambodia and Vietnam with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions
Periodically throughout the year, I teach photography aboard the Lindblad and National Geographic Expeditions vessels. This year, I had the privilege of leading a group throughout Cambodia and Vietnam. We started in Siem Reap, then cruised along the Mekong River to Vietnam and ended our voyage in Ho Chi Minh City. A few images from the expedition are below.
Caregiving, Isolation Top LGBT Concerns - AARP
Carlton Smith, an HIV survivor, is a gay rights advocate in Baltimore, Maryland who spends much of his time developing a tight-knit community of friends and organizers. One of those local friends is Carlton's caregiver, and based on Maryland law, that person can make life decisions for Carlton - the program is called Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act. To learn more about Carlton and the CARE Act, read the story here.
Andreas Georgiou for DIE ZEIT
Between 2010 and 2015, Andreas Georgiou was Greece's top statistician. During his tenure, Mr. Georgiou declared that Greece had falsified its figures to get more bailout money. He became public enemy #1 after speaking out and eventually was convicted for "breach of duty." I photographed Mr. Georgiou for DIE ZEIT; the story is here.
San Francisco and Yosemite National Park with National Geographic Student Expeditions
For the past four summers, I have led photography workshops with National Geographic Student Expeditions. This July, I worked with 41 high school students from around the world in San Francisco and Yosemite National Park over a 12-day period. Throughout the journey, we had amazing excursions to witness the landscape, understand the culture and meet the locals. We had classroom time where students learned the editing process, and at the end of the expedition, their work was exhibited in a prominent city gallery. The expedition was a wonderful chance to see the students grow -- not only as photographers, but also as young adults. Here are a few images that I made along the way.
